SEARCH TOOL FOR IDENTIFYING JUDGES This file describes the unix search tool "bold.ksh", which can be used to identify people who should be available to judge student papers. The search tool requires two input files: 1. An HTML document that contains the session details for the upcoming AGU meeting. The session details lists each presentation and its authors. This document can be downloaded from the AGU web site. 2. A text document that contains a list of potential judges. The list should contain last names only. No blank spaces are allowed in the name (e.g., for the name "Van Meter", the tool would search for "Van" and "Meter" as separate names). The search tool is a unix script. It is run using: bold.ksh where is the file containing the HTML document, and is the file containing the list of potential judges. The output from the script is a new copy of the HTML document. The document can be viewed and printed using a web browser program. When viewing the new document (with the web browser), all the names that have been found will appear in *bold* font. There is an example provided along with the script. It can be run by typing at the prompt: bold.ksh sm97h.html pjudge Some things to keep in mind when using this search tool: 1. The script cannot distinguish between author names and paper titles. Therefore, a search for a name like "Hill" will highlight the "Hill" in "Hillslope Processes ..." 2. Watch out for very short names (2 or 3 letters) and common names (e.g., "Smith"). These tend to highlight a large number of names and phrases. 3. Remember that presenting authors are most likely to serve as judges (they *must* attend and are usually willing to serve). Many people highlighted as co-authors do not attend the meeting or may go in other session. 4. Obviously, it is important that we continue to add the names of past judges, session chairs, and Hydrology committee members, to the list of names used in the search.
