Hydrology section members are concerned with the cycling of continental water (solid, liquid and vapor) at all scales, and with physical, chemical and biological processes driven by that cycling. More than 6,000 of the American Geophysical Union's (AGU) 35,000 members identify Hydrology as their primary section. |

At the 2008 Fall Meeting the Hydrology Section considered and approved an Early Career Hydrologic Sciences Award. This was forwarded to the AGU Honors and Recognition Committee and then to the Council which also gave approval. It is important for the advancement of hydrological science to promote a culture where we identify and support talent throughout at all stages of a career. Currently, AGU awards in hydrologic science are skewed toward senior scientists and students. Other than the Union level Macelwane Medal, there is no award for early career hydrologic scientists. What is needed is an award for excellent and significant early career contributions to hydrological science through research, educational or other activities . . . . The goal of this award is to recognize that the awardee's research, educational or other accomplishments, or the societal impact of his/her work, are outstanding for a scientist at his/her stage of career, and to acknowledge that the awardee shows exceptional promise continued contributions to the hydrological sciences. The award citation will read In recognition of significant early career contributions to hydrologic science. This summer we seek nominations for the very first Early Career Hydrologic Sciences Award. See Announcement below.

Nominations come from the AGU membership generally and are vetted by Section committees. Any member of the Union, whether or not a Fellow, may nominate another member for Fellow. Election is by a committee of Fellows. The Hydrology Section Fellows Committee is chaired by President-Elect Dennis Lettenmaier. The Union is requesting nominations for AGU Fellows, to be submitted electronically, by 1 July 2010. Further information can be found at http://www.agu.org/about/honors/fellows/fellguides.shtml including guidance on how to assemble a more successful nomination package. Regarding the package, you can also contact Dr. Lettenmaier for advice at:

There is still time (through 12 June, 2010) to submit session proposals for the 2010 Fall Meeting. See the web site: http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm09/program/session_proposals.php". It is a good idea to contact the Hydrology Technical Committee chair (contact information at http://hydrology.agu.org/comm/stac.html) associated with your proposed topic and/or H Section Meeting Chair Tom Meixner, especially if you have questions or need advice.

At its December meeting the Hydrology Section Executive Committee voted to revise the deadlines for Section Awards, moving them forward in the year. This year's deadline for the Hydrologic Sciences Award and Langbein Lecture is July 15. The new deadlines are reflected in the above nomination requests. The main reason for advancing the deadlines is to allow more time between notifying awardees of their honor and the abstract deadline for the Fall Meeting, in order to improve the probability that awardees can attend the meeting. We plan to move the deadlines up further, to mid-May or June, next year and beyond.
- Future Focus Task Force (FFTF) [more]
AGU Council, the governing board of AGU, is considering significant governance and structural changes, forming the FFTF last fall to plan these changes. Members include section members George Hornberger and Rosemary Knight. The task force, assisted by professional consultants, has been meeting with various constituencies, and will submit report to the Council and Union at the Joint Meeting in Toronto.

- AGU Executive Director [more]
As you read in EOS, Fred Spilhaus retired at the beginning of the year and the AGU Council appointed an Interim Director, Robert Van Hook, to oversee the transition. During Fred's long tenure the Union grew to 55,000 members, Hydrology became one of the three largest Sections of the Union, and we spun off WRR from JGR. Thank you, Fred.
- WRR Editorial Board [more]
Under the able leadership of Soroosh Sorooshian, AGU completed a successful search for a new Board, which was officially appointed by Union President Tim Grove at the beginning of March. We welcome Praveen Kumar as the new Editor in Chief, and his board of Tissa Illangasekare, Graham Sander, John Selker, and Tom Torgersen. They will be joined by Hoshin Gupta in December 2010. The board will serve until December 31, 2012. Tom returns after serving with the previous board, along side of Marc Parlange, Scott Tyler, Amilcare Porporato, and Brian Berkowitz. Thank you for your important work on WRR.
- AGU Director of Publicatios [more]
WRR is only one of the journals and books that AGU publishes. At the end of April, Judy Holoviak retired as Director of Publications after more than 40 years of service. Barbara Meyers Ford from Meyers Consulting Services has been appointed Interim Director of Publications.
